Betsy Rothman Today I took some time to go do haircuts for several of the roofless folks in our community under the bridge since the event Saturday was canceled. I had a lady reach out to me and personally ask me could I cut her and her finances hair and when I tell you those who I helped today needed it, I mean it! I wish I could give back everyday but I can’t. I gave 24 backpacks/27 blankets/drinks and feminine hygiene products along with some KFC to eat. I enjoy being able to give back and help others in need when I have the energy and time. I feel that I need to state, not everyone realizes how time consuming this can be-I spent 5 hours out there with them-which is longer than the event we were planning would have lasted. Me, one person can only do so much. I feel like a lot of times people who do good for others get taken advantage of and I used to be that person but not anymore. One of the girls I met had an entire head that was one big dreadlock-I spent a lot of time, trying not to rip and pull or hurt her and salvaged what I could to create a beautiful asymmetrical bob that made her feel better about herself-she no longer has to hide her hair in a ponytail. She smiled ear to ear knowing that she did not have to worry about her hair being a matter mess anymore. Her hair reminded me of when I worked in the elderly living facility-how most of the clients were bedridden and I would go to their room to help brush their hair and help keep it shampooed with a rinse-less shampoo. Being able to help someone like this is what I love to do. It’s not even just making someone look good-makes them feel good. It’s showing that I care and giving back when I know people need help. What I would give to just to go back in time and be what my sister needed the helping hand she needed to not let her forget she was so loved. I feel pretty drained from today-it took all I had not to break down and cry. This time of year is really tough for me-and I give back in my sisters memory. I could tell some of those people were suffering and needed more help than I could give them. I would like to say, if you see someone in your inner circle suffering and can lend a helping hand or even someone you just met a hand to help in anyway please do so. You never know what a little gesture could do to make someone’s day. Sometimes people won’t speak of their problems and sometimes those who feel guilt will speak over them to make it seem like they aren’t suffering-but honestly it’s just them being controlling/possessive and manipulative. Do not ever let someone stop you from being or doing what your heart desires as long as its for good. I promise you won’t regret making someone’s day or even better saving someone’s life. Let me also note that I hope everyone has a wonderful evening and I’m heading to bed on that note.
